Gotta watch out for them Muslim-speakers

Posted in The Wire on July 31, 2003 by Billy Dennis

I found the link
to this John
Kerry quote at North Georgia Dogma
:

“The obligation of the United States government is to rapidly
internationalize the effort in Iraq, get the target off of American
troops, bring other people, particularly Muslim-speaking and
Arab-speaking Muslim troops, into the region,” Kerry said.

Since when is “Muslim” a language? And, I’ve heard of people speaking
“Arabic” not not “Arab.” You would almost think John Kerry was some
ignorant hick from Texas …

Peoria jilted?

Posted in The Wire on July 31, 2003 by Billy Dennis

Lots of juicy news in this morning’s /Journal Star/:

*/JS:/* City Manager search resumes

*/JS:/* O’Malley still testing job-market waters

Columnist Phil Luciano makes himself useful for a change and does some
real reporting on the case of Steve O’Malley, who accepted a job offer
to become Peoria’s new city manager. While the city hadn’t officially
hired him, they were negotiating on terms of his employment. O’Malley’s
decision to spurn Peoria is probably good news in that we’re probably
better off without a guy who talked out of both sides of his mouth. But
weakens the position of the forces of fiscal responsibility and
strengthens those who want to city to pay for strip malls, baseball
parks, rec centers, etc.

I know, I know. Others have blogged about this article

from The Australian, but I needed to do it, just so I would have a link
of my own at the reader for future reference. Here is an excerpt.

Don Wycliff “sucks”

Posted in Watchdog on July 31, 2003 by Billy Dennis

Sorry, I couldn’t resist that headline.

The /Chicago Tribune/ ombudsman defends

the decision to censor the word “sucks” out of the cartoon “Zits,” but
not do the same to “Doonesbury”:

Trudeau is an 800-pound gorilla in the comics world, a fellow who
can do pretty much what he wants.

Wycliff also entertains us with etymology
of the word.

Welcome AOL trolls!

Posted in citizen journalism on July 31, 2003 by Billy Dennis

When I suggested that AOL’s entry into blog creation would lead to an
increase in the amount of trolls leaving rude comments at non-AOL blogs,
was accused of elitism and classism and every other politically
incorrect ‘ism imaginable. All I did was point out the accurate fact
that the when AOL membership took off in the mid to late-’90s, it not
only brought a lot of novices onto the Internet, it also brought in a
lot of trolls. Anyone who used newsgroups prior to the AOL take off
noticed what happened.

Well, Glenn over at “Hi! I’m Black”
just
posted the IP address of an AOL based troll who was leaving racist
comments on his site.

Before the knee-jerk PC crowd launch their attack, I will say that NOT
ALL AOL MEMBERS ARE TROLLS. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG ABOUT USING AOL.
THERE ARE MANY TROLLS WHO ARE NOT AOL USERS. Therefore, there is no
reason to leave comments saying that not all AOL members are trolls,
there is nothing wrong with using an AOL account and that one doesn’t
have to be an AOL member to be a troll. I nevertheless anticipate many
people leaving comments saying exactly these three things.

If this simply an isolated case? Did this particular troll find its way
onto the Blogosphere because it followed a link from an AOL screen? I
have no way of knowing.

But, I would like to hear other bloggers’ stories about persistent
trolls and whether they come from AOL-Land.
