Local: A sentiment shared by many in District 150 (UPDATED)

Here’s a good enterprise story from Dave Haney of the Journal Star about how school districts waste money busing kids to school for just one hour. Here’s the money quote as far as I’m concerned:

Peoria School District 150 will spend $18,000 in fuel and bus driver wages for that one hour students will spend at school on Friday, spokeswoman Stacey Shangraw said Wednesday.

“I couldn’t find anyone who could tell me why,” Shangraw said.

Neither can the rest of us, Stacey.

UPDATE: Now that I think about it, I don’t know why anyone could object to kids attending school for just one hour. Heck, they ought to do it every day. Think of the educational nirvana that District 150 could create with a daily, 6-hour communal teacher prep period.

the 1-hour-schoolday on the last day of school is nothing new in 150. I went through it every year K-12 (1987-2000). Are they just now realizing what a waste it is?

It has to do with meeting the state mandated minimum number of days. Someone on the Washington School Board explained it to me.
