Local: Stay away from Main and Sheridan
June 18, 2008 in Local
By Billy DennisFirst, we have this couple:
Destinee S. Shorty, 18, of Peoria was booked into the Peoria County Jail on a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm. She is slated to appear in bonding court Thursday.
About 4:15 p.m., as police investigated a serious accident at Main Street and Sheridan Road, Shorty’s boyfriend, Darrell A. Brown, 19, approached police wearing a blood-soaked shirt, saying he’d been shot.
And now we have this tragedy:
The 5-year-old Peoria girl hit by a truck Tuesday afternoon at a busy West Bluff intersection is in critical condition today at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
Jamirah Richardson-Brock was riding her bicycle with family friend Kimberly Pilard, 20, west on Main Street about 3:40 p.m. when the pair stopped at the crosswalk at Sheridan Road.
Pilard, also of Peoria, told the girl to wait for the crosswalk signal before proceeding. When it flashed, the girl peddled off the sidewalk and into the intersection, police said.
She was struck by a pickup truck turning north onto Sheridan from westbound Main.
While visibility is somewhat limited for south-bound traffic on Sheridan at this intersection, it is not limited in the situation described above.

Shouldn’t that title be Main and Sheridan?

The number of asshats who cannot recognize and obey the pedestrian crosswalk signal is alarming. The number of times I have been near missed at Main and University are beyond count. Then there are the one’s who suddenly stop with the ‘OMG there is a pedestrian crossing’ look which quickly turns to cursing. They get the proper salute in return.
One of those asshats actually sends their kids to my son’s school. I was so livid that day. Lucky them they were leaving as I rounded the corner to drop the kids off.
There really needs to be a law where if you hit a pedestrian who is lawfully crossing or in a lawful spot (ie the sidewalk), you lose your license forever. Such laws are widespread in Europe. They work.

Mahkno: The problem is aggravated by the fact there are so many Bradley students (and their parents, judging by the two sets of morons I encountered on Parent’s Day) who simply refuse to A) Use the crosswalks; B) look both ways before walking out in traffic; and C) take their %$@!ing cell phones away from their ears for a goddamn minute.

What problem is aggravated? The problem of someone being hit while in a crosswalk with a walk sign? You would think that the slew of Bracley students and their parents - all on cell phones - jaywalking willy nilly would make the drivers in the Walkable West Bluff that much more vigilent that an acutal light with a crosswalk and Wlk sign would really catch their eye. And there are plenty of drivers on their cell phones.
WCBU had a story today on West Bluff children decorating the windows of Lagron Miller/One World as part of a Walkable West Bluff - what they love about their neighborhood. Kind of ironic

Sheridan & Main is OK during the day, but I wouldn’t go for a midnight stroll.

I would say that Sheridan Rd. heading north across from where the accident happened is pretty bad as well, right alongside turning right from Sheridan on to Main where the accident did happen.
Both spots are obstructed in their views until you are halfway into the intersections (one blocked by Running Central and the other by the cars in the left lane). If there was a car sitting in the left lane, and he pulled up in the right, he would have not been able to see a pedestrian until they were almost in front of him. Not saying that’s an excuse, but something needs to be done about the intersection.
As for the students, during the summer, it ain’t just students. I’ve seen plenty of CAT workers on lunch, professors from BU, and other common Peorians not using the crosswalks as well. Even during the school year. I think if both groups of people, ones using the crosswalks and those running people over in them, took some time to actually pay attention to what they were doing, we wouldn’t have so many problems.
