Local: Ruffin cops a plea, Lyons declines to hold a press conference

You know how Kevin Lyons has been getting his name in the paper a lot these days? Well, not this time:

Former Bradley University basketball standout Daniel Ruffin pleaded guilty Tuesday to striking his former girlfriend.

Ruffin, 23, entered his plea in Peoria County Circuit Court during an unscheduled court appearance which saw the charge of misdemeanor domestic battery reduced to misdemeanor battery, said Chief Public Defender Thomas Penn Jr.

The change allowed Ruffin to receive a nine-month sentence of court supervision which, if he doesn’t get into any trouble during that time, will result in no conviction on his record.

Ruffin’s victim sustained “red ligature type markings” on the front and right side of her neck, the article states.

I seem to think this means he also can’t be charged with a felony if there ever happens to be another incident in which he’s charged with domestic battery. (Not that that’d ever happen to such an upstanding citizen.)

Not entirely a “get out of jail free” card for the future, but it certainly helps ensure he won’t get the book thrown at him.

And, wow, now Kevin Lyons doesn’t have to get beat up for prosecuting someone popular! It’s a win-win for everybody!

Danny was trying to restrain the girl because she was going batshit crazy. True, it may not be smart for a high profile athelete to even touch a woman for fear of retribution in the court of public opinion (See Bill Dennis et al), but the girl was completely nuts. He pleaded out to get the whole ordeal over with and move on.

I’m with Morton on this one. Not his fault. But he laid hands on a female so they had to stick him with something I guess. Sad.

  5.   Billy Dennis Says:

His story was remarkably similar to almosty every single police report I’ve ever read. Oh, and I do know that sometimes people make these things up. Maybe she gave herself the ligature marks around her throat.
