Local: Hy-Vee coming to Peoria
Good news, as far as I am concerned:
Hy-Vee, based in West Des Moines, Iowa, said it will build a nearly 84,000-square-foot store with attached wine and spirits at the end of the shopping center that once was home to Cohen Furniture.
The store, which will be the 12th Hy-Vee in Illinois and the first in Peoria, will create more than 400 jobs, according to a news release from Hy-Vee.
A construction timeline won’t be set until the city approves the plans, the release said.
I love HyVee. I shopped there all the time when I lived and worked in Canton. Of course, it’s been so long, I forget why I loved it. It will, no doubt, give Kroger’s a run for its money. The store will benefit from the TIF enterprise zone granted to Sheridan Village. No sales taxes will be paid on the cost of construction materials used in the remodeling necessary to make the store fit.
And I think this would put to bed the rumors a Whole Foods store was going into Sheridan Village.
My two cents: Personally, I think the former Adams Street Market would be a perfect location for a health food store. Why not? It will give sprout-eating liberals a chance to go slumming and feel good about themselves.

I thought last week they said it was going to be upscale. I love HyVee, but I wouldn’t classify it as upscale. I guess if by upscale you mean newest in town.

Enterprise Zone, not TIF.
