It appears that Smothers' start date at the Journal Star was June 3, 1985.

Kenyon's is Oct. 1, 1944 -- between Operation Market Garden and the Ardennes Offensive. My hat's off to her. Helen Thomas of Hearst has a longer career, as she started at UPI in 1943. But Theo has worked longer for the same organization.

She is the only charter member of the Peoria Newspaper Guild still working at the Journal Star. I don't think she'd contradict me if I said her role in organizing the newsroom and getting the Guild's first contract was one of her most important accomplishments. She also outlasted Jack Brimeyer.

Rumors abound about Theo. I won't spread any of them here, though. Everything should be clear by sometime next week, I think. A lot of people seem to be playing this one close to the vest.

Smothers took the cash and is running? Good for him.

As long as Theo Jean Kenyon is still there, rocking the world of journalism, all is well, though.

While we're on the subject, Journal Star reporter Mike Smothers, one of a very few people ever to hit Rick Baker and live to tell about it, will be celebrating his last day at the paper Saturday.
