Politics: Another sign of weakness in the Aaron Shock juggernaut

July 15, 2008 in Politics

By Billy Dennis

Heh. Those pesky farmers keep causing trouble for the Aaron Schock campaign and those associated with it.

In an election for Republican State Central Committeeman that proved more contentious than unifying, the Pike County Republican Party chairman was elected to the post over state Rep. Aaron Schock’s campaign manager.

John Birch was elected by his peers Saturday to represent the 20-county 18th Congressional District. He nabbed weighted votes from 13 of the 20 counties for a total of 48,465 to Steve Shearer’s 32,366.

Wow. Here’s Aaron Schock who wants to get elected to Congress from the 18th District. So, instead of spending all his time working to establish goodwill within the party and to get out the vote in November, what does Schock’s campaign manager do? He runs for a party job. And it’s the kind of race that ticks off a lot of people. While the news media like to portray Schock as a clean campaigner, the truth is that Shearer has a reputation for playing dirty behind the scenes. I’d be surprised if that’s NOT what Karen McDonald meant when she used the word “contentious.”

Instead of getting a job that would help him manage the party apparatus to his client’s benefit, Shearer instead generated a whole lot of bad will.

It’s easy to imagine some of these people simply won’t be getting out and working enthusiastically for Schock.

And the best part:

“I enjoy politics, I’ve always been a Republican. My entire family has been Republican,” said Birch, manager and operator of Birch Farms, a corn, soybeans and cattle farming operation.

I seem to recall there’s someone else in this campaign who is a farmer. Oh, yeah:

Just because you keep insisting the Schock campaign is “in trouble” doesn’t make it so, Billy. Obviously you have reached the point where you have repeated it often enough that you now think it’s true. That happens to my kids a lot.

Diane is correct. Wishing doesn’t make it true. I think you also said that Schock was in trouble when Spears was running against him.

Also, July and August is not really the best time to peak during an election cycle. The best time to peak is the first week of November. I think Callahan supporters (as well as Obama supporters) need to be aware of that. I think Hillary proved that point in the primary, peaking before the voting started while Obama peaked in February.

The big guns until Labor Day. Then it will be two months of non-stop, in-your-face campaign ads, rallies and speeches.

BTW, Bill, your support of Darrin LaHood seems to have REALLY softened your views of Ray. Seems you’ve grown fond of Ray now that you have another windmill to tilt at.

“where you have repeated it often enough that you now think it’s true. ”

Wha? It has worked so well for the Bush & Co.

    “Wishing doesn’t make it true.”

…say the Republicans who keep insisting Schock isn’t in trouble.
