The issue that McGee is failing to realize is that the Whigs are circumventing the ballot access issue by combining their strategy and tactics with their idea of starting with a winning track record by running Whigs on major party tickets. The Whigs seem to get it that the majority of average Joes and Janes won't be checking the name of a candidate that isn't next to a D or an R. Change often comes from within.

Given the Greens' success in Europe, Aus/NZ, and parts of Canada (as well as in local elections in the US), including experience in governing coalitions, I don't think it's non-viable as a third party -- I would suggest the problem in the US is a ballot-access issue, which is exactly the same problem with Whigs will face.
