Local: Amanda Hamm is a free woman, her babies still dead
On Feb. 2, 2007, Amanda Hamm’s attorney predicted his client would spend just 14 months in custody afer being sentenced to 10 years in prison for drowning her children, ages 6, 3 and 23 months. After all, she gets credit for time served waiting for trial, plus half off for good behavior. But Hamm actually served 17 months in prison, having been freed from prison today.
Look on the bright side: Hamm is still young enough to have more kids.

Wow, only 17 months in prison for murdering all three of your children? That’s not right.

Technically, she served five years and a few months when time served awaiting trial is taken into account.
But still.
Jurors apparently bought into the argument that she was the victim of male influence.
I think anyone defenctive enough to killer her three children because she was in loooooooooove with her abusive boyfriend so much deserved to spend the rest of her sad life in prison.
There are women serving longer sentences because they were caught holding their boyfriend’s dope.

She wasn’t actually convicted of murder. Her boyfriend was.
Hamm was convicted of child endangerment.
Does this justify the fact that a woman who helped murder her children is free from prison in less time than any of them were under her care (Minus the time she was awaiting trial)? Absolutely not.
It’s just another sad commentary on how this country’s parole system needs to be abolished and people who are convicted of any crime, whether it’s petty theft or murder, should serve their full sentence.

She was sentenced not by a jury, but by a judge. She could have got 20 years, but the judge, who is now retired, wanted to be lenient, I guess. Also, Illinois doesn’t really have a “parole system” except for those prisoners who were sentenced before the “truth in sentencing” law went into effect. In any event, it is very upsetting to know that she’s free walking around and her little innocent ones will never know freedom.
