Politics: A mea culpa on my ‘lipstick on a pig’ post

My apologies for this post. Apparently, I had heard an edited version of Barack Obama’s “lip stick on a pig” comment, and thought that he was specifically referring to Sarah Palin. I just looked at the clip in context, and it’s obvious he critiquing John McCain’s record.

So, I’ll go back and update that post. Meanwhile here is the clip:

Gov. Palin isn’t even mentioned. And for the record, here’s Sen. McCain talking about Hillary Clinton’s health care proposals:

Again, he’s not talking abut Sen. Clinton, but her proposals.

So I have to side with Sen. Obama on this one. This is a manufactured outrage.

Thank you for the quick fix.

[...] UPDATE: I’ve reconsidered this post after looking at a longer clip of the speech in question. [...]

I mean this as a totally nonpartisan comment: Why are politicians scum?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a presidential campaign in which both sides are so dedicated to giving the other no quarter.

Will we ever again have a president who truly wants to lead the country as a whole. I never thought I’d say this, but LBJ (a consummate Washington insider) is starting to look good to me.

  4.   Emtronics Says:

Let the Republican swift boating begin. Can’t wait until the debates when Palin will NOT have any 3×5 cards in front of her provided by the Republican machine. We shall see.

  5.   punditry Says:

Kudos to you Billy! I would like to see print and tv media (radio is already owned by the right) follow your lead here and put the quote into context…..Oh wait, if it had been left in its original context there would have been no story and maybe they would have had to report candidate positions on boring issues like the economy, healthcare, the wars etc.

  6.   diane vespa Says:

Billy, your first reaction was the correct one, as evidenced by the similar reaction of every one in the room when he said it. Don’t let their hocus-pocus cloud your judgement, lest you be moving to swampland in Florida.

  7.   postsimian Says:

“Anyone who thinks this is an attack is either a shady, lowlife opportunist or a blithering idiot, period.”

So which one are you: shady, lowlife opportunist or blithering idiot?

  8.   Linda Says:

I wasn’t ‘in the room’ when this was said, but from the clips I have watched of it, even the audience knew he was referring to McPOW/Bush’s 8 years of hell, and that you cannot put lipstick on that pig (those years and the promise of more) and make it attractive. Get over it. This was NOT about Palin and NO ONE in the audience thought that it was. The laughter was about it being a funny reference – one of those old sayings that just makes one laugh. (The last 7+ years have been anything but fun OR funny.) Seriously, get over it and quit making crap up, like McShame/Palin keep doing ala Bush/Cheney/Rove/Rumsfeld. Enough of the BS ‘hocus pocus’. It’s just gotten sooo old. And guess what? Not all the land in FL is swampland, otherwise no one wouldn’t want to go there, now would they? We are all sick of the Bush/Cheney lies and manipulations and distortions and yet here we go again with the same crap from McPalin.

  9.   cgiselle12 Says:

Diane – I’m really disappointed by your comment. Generally, you are fair and considerate. But seriously – It is entirely clear that Obama is talking about McCain’s plan for the country. Just as in the McCain clips it is entirely clear that he is talking about HRC’s health care plan, and not Hillary herself. No dems got all up in arms when McCain said “lipstick on a pig” in the spring.

Does every reference to lipstick now somehow refer to Palin? If I reference a lipstick jungle – am I calling Palin some kind of urban powermom?

The “hocus pocus” is entirely from McSame’s camp – and they got called on their silly outrage by just about every news show last night – including Faux News!

Something I also saw discussed last night was “Karl Rove style politics.” And in your post, you appear to be subscribing to just that style. Making up outrage over a non-issue to enable your candidate to avoid talking about anything substantive. Can we get back to a discussion on the economy or health care or Iraq or the energy crisis now? The GOP bought themselves a day. Enough!

And “lest you be moving to swampland in Florida?” I’m honestly not even sure what that means? Are you dissing Florida -whose current gov is a Republican? Are you dissing rednecks – more often than not they’re also republicans? I don’t like swamps either, and would never move back to FL, but some people adore living there. I’m confused by that comment.

  10.   EP_Blondie Says:

Lordy…hasn’t anyone ever heard the saying about being gullible? “I have some swampland in Florida for sale…” giselle and Linda are now jumping all over Diane in the same fashion that they are condeming McCain for. Sheesh….no lowlife opportunists here. Just blithering idiots!

  11.   postsimian Says:

EP – for the record, I understood the swampland comment, as well as the irony of using it.

  12.   Linda Says:

Oh, save it, Blondie. That was not what my comment was about. That was just a bonus shot. And I’m pretty certain Diane can defend her own comment just fine. You, like McPOW, take one tiny party and blow it up out of proportion. Oh, because there is nothing else to harp on? No REAL issues to discuss. So glad the last/next 8 years have been/maybe so good for you!

  14.   nontimendum Says:

Calling him McPOW cheapens you and anything you post. Resorting to making fun of his experience as a POW is shameful.

  15.   postsimian Says:

So is attempting to deflect any criticism and oversight by saying “I’m a POW, therefor it is unethical and unpatriotic to question anything I say.”

When he stops using it as a cop out, we’ll stop using it as ridicule.

  16.   Anon Says:

Linda said: And I’m pretty certain Diane can defend her own comment just fine.

    Apparently, Potisimian can’t.

  17.   Linda Says:

Sorry, but it’s the only thing he mentioned during his GOP nomination speech and the only thing we heard out of his mouth regarding his experience. He has cheapened it, not I. And his continued use of it as a crutch shames no one but him. Ask some other POWs who were there too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KjsEs46C70
(Oh, I know…he’s got ulterior motives and only John McShame loves his country.) Calling Obama the Messiah is ok though? That doesn’t cheapen the Repubs’ Christianity? Double standards aren’t cutting the argument anymore. A revolution is brewing. I notice that you had no response to the real issues here, just the same old, shame old. Shame on you for the last 8 years and shame on you for the next if McPalin are elected. So spare me your phony disgust of my comment. Take your GOP’s $9,696,215,178 national debt and explain to my granddaughter why she will be living in a 3rd world USA when she grows up.

  18.   Linda Says:

Anon: And where was I defending Postsimian? Just saying it doesn’t make it true!

  19.   postsimian Says:

Anon Sense: make some. Have anything to say about the issues? Or are we content to keep attacking the messenger?

  20.   Linda Says:

Eh, Simi, when they have no issues to stand on, they only know one thing. Which brings us back to this phony lipstick on a pig BS. But the MsShame camp doesn’t seems to want to discuss that anymore, since it’s been called out for what it was. BS.

So, are you better off than you were 8 years ago? Are your children better off than they were 8 years ago? Will they be 8 years from now? Will your grandchildren inherit a just and prosperous America?

  21.   cgiselle12 Says:

Okay, so “I have some swampland in Florida to sell you” = “I’ve got a bridge to sell you” when one grew up in the Northeast like I did. Honest to God – never heard the swampland version of the gullibility joke.

I really wondered if she was dissing Florida or Charlie Crist or the everglades he just saved… serious.

That’s a real mature, intelligent response! It just is still the same old, same old. We’ve heard these kind of responses for 8 years now. It’s either vile hatred, lies, innuendos, or just trash like this. Do you have anything remotely intelligent to add to the real conversation or just this typical, nonsensical babble?

And Diane, the only thing hilarious is your responses. You need to get your info from something other than Fauz News or Rush. It’s like politics for the National Inquirer crowd.

  27.   Billy Dennis Says:

And I’ve been doing this formore than six years. From personal experience, I can tell you ALL that is is both possible and DESIRABLE to disagree, strongly, and still communicate politely and even chearfully with people.

    Just a thought.

  28.   postsimian Says:

Sorry Bill. I just have this reflex that causes me to respond promptly and appropriately to malicious, axiomatic bullshit.

  29.   BJ Stone Says:

Hey, Cheerful Billy, I’m still waitin’ for my apology in the other thread! :D

  30.   Billy Dennis Says:

B.J. Which “other post” and “why.” If I wronged you by name, I’ll apologize, all the while mumbling to myself about how SOME people get their feeling shurt so easilly.

    ;-)

  31.   anon Says:

It is so easy to argue with a lib and very little energy output is required. Just a conservative sentence or two out there, sit back, and watch the perfect Republican argument manifest itself right before your eyes.

  32.   postsimian Says:

In other words,”I don’t have an argument because I’m obviously wrong, but I’m going to pretend I have one by being pretentious and condescending.”

    A stellar argument, indeed.
