Politics: Illinois AFL-CIO predicts massive union support for Callahan
(Press release)
Carrigan: Union Support Strong for Callahan in 18th Race
Illinois AFL-CIO President Michael Carrigan said the support for Colleen Callahan’s bid for Congress runs very deep and the Labor Movement will have a massive voter turnout effort on her behalf starting Saturday.
“We have more than 40,000 union members in the 18th District,†Carrigan said. “We have reached out to members on the issues and candidates and, for good reason, more than 70 percent of our members support Callahan.â€
Support for Callahan comes from local unions who know the distrct best.
“This district needs someone who understands how important good jobs are to the local economies – someone who will support expanding the middle class by creating and keeping good jobs. Colleen Callahan will put the working families of this district first,†said Carrigan. The Illinois AFL-CIO and its affiliated unions have conducted a vigorous outreach to the union families in the district through phone calls, mail and local union communication.
“We know our members are excited about electing Callahan because many have volunteered to hit the phones and knock on doors for her starting today through election day,†Carrigan said.
Carrigan will be joined by Peoria area labor leaders for a press conference highlighting union members’ support for Callahan Saturday. The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Peoria Labor Temple, 400 N. E. Jefferson, Peoria.

Since when is union support for a Democrat news? It’s like the chamber of commerce supporting a Republican. This union and Callahan obviously feel insecure about union members suport for her. And hey, even Callahan’s campaign says 3 out of 10 union men and women support Schock.

I’ll give the devil his due. This is great news for Callahan, one of the few bright spots she’s gotten. If they are finally willing to put some resources behind her, that will undoubtedly help. Certainly Sen. Durbin’s role in this can not be understated. Do I think this turns the tide? No, but it will serve to reduce the margin down some for Schock.

Lets see now 70% of 40000 equals 28000 votes plus or minus 10%
Callahan will need between 150,000 to 160,000 votes to win the contest.
Back ground: 1992 270K votes cast
1994 197K votes cast,
1998 158 K votes cast ( no opponent)
2000 258K votes cast,
2002 192K votes cast ( no opponent),
2004 307K votes cast,
2006 223K votes cast
150,000 minus 28,000 leaves 122,000 she needs to win. The big question is will she break 100k on votes cast for her.
We will see.
