Local: Citizen Journalism takes D150 to school
While I have been fiddling around with Blog Peoria to make is easier for citizen journalists to use, C.J. has been committing some great citizen journalism. He’s blogging the Hell out of District 150 these days, with posts here, here, here and here.
I am reading NONE of these things in the Peoria Journal Star, a newspaper that was once — and very recently, too — worthy of respect. No one would mistake if for the New York Times, but it was better than many papers of its size and circulation. Now, it’s like they are trying to shed pages. I picked up a copy the other day and was astonished at how skinny it was.

“… it was better than many papers of it’s size and circulation.”
And had copy editors (and likely still does) that know the difference between its and it’s.
I hope that, somehow, it can endure and prosper. Part of me is still in that newsroom.

Um, it is trying to shed pages, at least from what I’ve heard. More GateHouse financial trouble-imposed cuts.

As a lifelong area resident, I do appreciate getting local news. But I get irritated at the arrogant attitude of the anonymous editorial writers. I would bet that the columnists they subscribe to, make them sign an agreement not to edit the columns they buy. Why then do they edit the subscribers’ correspondence to the opinion page? After all, we’re paying the bills. In a lot of city projects, it seems to be the paper’s way is the only way; anyone who disagrees is a fool. At some point I may decide the publication simply isn’t worth it any more.
