Local: Once again, Main and University has sprung a leak

The City of Peoria recently spent a bunch of cash upgrading the intersection of Main and University. I forget exactly how long it took, but I recall my route to and from work was changed for many weeks. Within days of completion, a crew from Illinois American Water Company was tearing up the road to fix a leak. Well, we have another one. Here’s a Peoria City Hall press release:

Starting immediately, Illinois American Water Company will be repairing a water leak at the intersection of Main and University. The right lane of eastbound Main will be closed on the west side of the intersection. In addition, the left lane and left turn lane of northbound University will be closed on the south side of intersection. Traffic delays are expected. The work is anticipated to last through the weekend.

I’d like to see the Peoria City Council discuss a way to get IAWCo to pay to return that intersection to the status in which it was BEFORE they tore it up. At the very least, they need to forced to make permanent repairs to whatever equipment is causing all the problems.

    Crap.

Ummm … I’m pretty sure it’s a water line and not a sewer line.

If you ask my wife, she’d tell you Peoria uses the same pipe for both.

I’m sure IAW loves having to dig it up again too.

It’s probably the other way around. When Peoria upgraded the road, they probably disturbed the water main underneath. If anything, Peoria owes Illinois American for breaking the main.

    Exactly.

How would scraping off and replacing a few inches of asphalt break a water line? Sorry, I don’t see it.

  8.   Peorian Says:

Actually, all water and wastewater infrastructure is under our roads. Therefore, in order to make repairs, it is necessary to dig up the road. Also, Illinois American Water pays a permit fee to the city every time they have to open up a road.

In addition, the water crews do not do the street repair. They make the water repairs as quickly as possible and once they are done the street department comes in to repair the roadway. Oftentimes they will not do it over the weekend and if it rains or snows you cannot lay concrete.
