Local: Road rage over Road Ranger

Yeah, these are the same guys who ticked me off last year (it’s a long story, and I don’t come off looking particularly smart, so I’ll forgo a link). Now they have copped to accidentally double charging customers:

In the one incident reported directly to the corporate office through the customer service hotline, a customer said he had two charges on his credit card statement, one for gas he bought at the pump with the working screen and one for the gas pumped by the next customer who drove up to the pump with a non-working screen.

That complaint came only in the past three or four days, Helmick said, though an e-mail warning drivers not to use that Road Ranger station has been circulating central Illinois at least for the past week.

The e-mail, whose original author is not known, recounted an incident similar to the one reported to the corporate office.

“I inserted my card at the pump, the reader said approving for about a minute and nothing ever happened,” the e-mail stated. “So I canceled the transaction and pulled ahead to another pump where my transaction went through. So when I checked my bank statement, they had charged me for the gas I got, plus they had charged me $20 on the pump that didn’t work.”

Helmick said the problem wasn’t addressed sooner because employees at the gas station told customers to contact their banks, rather than referring them to the customer service hotline, which they are supposed to do.

I have a new steadfast rule regarding gas stations. Pay cash AFTER you pump the gas.

And businesses need to learn you can’t rip off people and expect to NOT get bad mouthed all over the Internet.

There is a service station across the street from Road Ranger. Their gas always costs more than Road Ranger, but I’ll pay that premium to NOT be treated poorly.
