Local: Is city street department in cahoots with auto repair shops?

Massive corruption and/or payoffs is  one explanation, I suppose, for the continued existence of a monster pothole on North North Street in front of Central High School.

Some background: On Christmas Eve, I hit this monster pothole that caused my front driver-side tire to immediately go flat.  It was several days later that I finally managed to get it fixed. Unfortunately, the guy I had fix it didn’t do it right and the damn tire nearly fell off, but that’s another story.

The city soon came out and “fixed” the hole, but they ignored a second, possibly worse hole a few feet down the road. Luckily, I learned to not trust the condition of this street, and managed to miss the second hole for the weeks-long period it was there.

I mean, it’s not like this pothole was in front of an IMPORTANT school or anything.

Eventually, THAT hole was filled.

But guess what made a second appearance? You’re right, the ORIGINAL hole. Just as wide, just as deep. In fact, it’s probably worse now.

So it got me to wondering. Certainly, the people who fix out streets cannot POSSIBLY be that incompetent. So what’s the cause? Do they WANT people to hit potholes like this? Do they want people to have to pay money they really cannot afford to keep their cars operating for the privilege of driving to work to keep pay for the car repairs they need to have a car capable of driving to work on crappy city roads?

Forgive me for the rant. But when the city in which I live seems unable to provide essential services like street repair, I start getting cranky.

I frequent Farmington Road and the bridge that crosses Kickapoo Creek has had a hole big enough to swallow my car for weeks. I’m waiting for someone to fall through it into the creek.

Those holes Billy are the new traffic control features being implemented by the city. After years of West Bluff neighborhoods complaining about traffic speed and volume, they are FINALLY doing something about. Now you go complaining about it. These traffic guys just can’t win.

    Slow down….

  3.   In the Know Says:

I think the crew in the street department may be that lax. Weren’t they too lazy awhile back to move a carcass of a small dead animal from the middle of the road when they were striping it with a yellow line? The poor thing not only got hit by a car and was stopped “dead” in its tracks, but ended up having a yellow stripe painted down its back.
    The nerve!

Billy: that headline is very misleading and crazy; it takes two persons to form a conspiracy and there aren’t two in the street department smart enough to figure something like that out. Otherwise, they would be patching the holes in the streets twelve hours a day. Just get it done will you!

There was a thing on NPR… where Lexington KY, was selling advertising rights to pot hole fixes. After the hole is filled, the concrete, asphalt, whatever is stamped with the company logo; “Fixed by yourname“. So Lexington has an increasing number of KFC sponsored pot hole fixes, among others. More revenue for the city and advertising for local businesses (KFC is based in Lexington).

A lot of potholes in our great city . As i said last time we wrote about potholes in our community . Take a ride out in the 4 th. district by I/Hop and that shopping center out there and fall in. We have this issue all over the city . As far as the holes by Central High, they have been that way since my son, went there [ in the 80’s . Good luck on that issue.

  8.   Sud O. Nym Says:

Just curious, Billy, did you think to report the potholes either time you saw them? 494-CARE, in case you are wondering.

  9.   Billy Dennis Says:

Why bother with that when I have a blog that serves to notify both the city AND the public. My way is more transparent.

  10.   Sud O. Nym Says:

Well, you hit the first pothole 3 months ago. Glad you are timely at least.

  11.   Peo Proud Says:

Ah yes, I’m the center of the universe approach to public services. I’ll just blog about it and expect those in charge to read by blog daily to know what services they should provide —- rather than utilizing the already established process for reporting service concerns (494-CARE).

    LOL.

  12.   Billy Dennis Says:

Waitaminute: Are you saying I am NOT the center of the universe? Impossible! Mom would never lie to me.

  13.   Sud O. Nym Says:

Your mom used to pay me to agree with you that you were the center of the universe. Her last check bounced.

Just saying that sometimes you DON’T have to reinvent the wheel…..
