Instead of worrying about Peoria’s image, let’s worry about Peoria’s reality

I thought I was in store for a puff piece when I saw this headline: City Councilman leads effort to brand region.
But Peoria Journal Star reporter John Sharp actually made some phone calls and got some balance for his article on Peoria City Councilman Ryan’s Spain efforts to “brand” the city.

“You want the city to put its best foot forward, but you have to be careful to make sure it doesn’t get out in front of substance,” 2nd District City Councilwoman Barbara Van Auken said. “I don’t think it’s unique to Peoria, but communities sometimes get an inferiority complex, and they forget that isn’t the view that people who are several steps back from it have. If you read the various news from around the country, Peoria does quite well, and its image is good.”
