As far as Rick Santorum is concerned, mainstream Protestantism “is gone from the world of Christianity.” That’s what he told students at Florida’s Ave Maria University, founded by Domino’s Pizza mogul Tom Monaghan, during a 2008 lecture.
The clip was unearthed by People for the American Way and played on Saturday’s “Up With Chris Hayes” on MSNBC.
“We all know that this country was founded on a Judeo-Christian ethic. But the Judeo-Christian ethic — sure the Catholics had some influence — but this was a Protestant country,” said Santorum. “And the Protestant ethic, mainstream, mainline Protestantism, and of course we look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is a shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it.”
Good luck picking up the evangelical Christian vote, Rick.
You know, I remember reading an article describing nine ways that Rick Santorum advocates positions that are at odds with his Catholicism. Death penalty? Santorum favors it, the Bishops do not. But abortion? Oh, yes. he bases his entire candidacy on how much he opposes it. He basks in how much of a good Catholic he is.
The reality is, he’s a stinking hypocrite.
David P. Jordan will chime in to spin this three … two … one …

wow………
just wow
The MSNBC show Up with Chris Hayes is the best talk show on TV. Great panel members, lively analysis. It’s on early Sat and Sunday mornings, so set your DVRs and VCRs.
Santorum is a throwback to the 15th century. Without his billionaire backer, Mr. Aspirin-between-the-knees, he would have dropped out by now for lack of funds.
Want more dirt on Santorum? Read this:
http://motherjones.com/politics/2012/01/how-rick-santorum-ripped-off-american-military-veterans
It tells how Santorum as a senator did the bidding of the Catholic church to rip of veterans.
Trying to put the brakes on America’s headlong rush into hedonism is SO 15th century. Yup.
We should embrace Islam though. LOL
Where else beside Mother Jones has this report appeared, Elaine?
And it’s funny. Bill doesn’t most Christians are REAL Christians…even though he’s a recently professed atheist.
“Mainline Protestantism” = Liberalism.*
*Emergents, Episcopalians, United Methodists and United Churches of Christ, etc., all of which have succumbed to man-centered, rather than Christ-centered religion.
Conservative Protestants agree.
So, Mr. Jordan. Under Your typology, Jim Wallis, due to his criticism of right wing politics isn’t a Christian, but someone like Ted Haggard, who received weekly calls from President Bush and was the head of National Association of Evangelicals from 2003 to 2006 is a “good” Christian.
We’ll overlook the male prostitute and crystal meth.
You REALLY need to take a break, you let your irrational hatred of other peoples’ beliefs cloud your judgment on everything.
What’s next? Are Compact Florescent Bulbs the work of Satan?
BrianG,
I never said these groups aren’t “Christians,” including Jim Wallis. I’m not familiar with his theological stances (one can be theologically conservative yet vote for a liberal Democrat; black pastors do it all the time
That said, there are a lot of pretenders in the conservative churches as well. Everyone is guilty of breaking God’s laws (Romans 3:23) and salvation doesn’t come from faith in conservative or liberal causes. If we expect perfection in church leaders, then we will be seriously dissapointed.
But back to the point, “A Mess NBC” (get it…hee hee) jumped to conclusions about Santorum’s 2008 speech. Neither they nor Billy Dennis are familiar enough with debates within Christendom to have discerned the former senator’s point.

Another is by the late “Internet Monk” Michael Spencer:

There are indeed religious conservatives who criticize other religious conservatives for unbiblical beliefs and actions. Santorum (whose Catholic beliefs are subject to legitimate criticism) knows this.
I find it fascinating to see the Catholic Church co-opting tactics that were honed by the moral majority. They are using wedge issues and faith as pressure to push voters toward their causes. This whole, you are not Christian enough or Christian at all unless you politically support X,Y, and Z has been around with us for a while now. I am just surprised that this tactic still has traction.
Brian: “irrational hatred of other people’s beliefs…”
OMFG. You should work in a movie theater because your projection is perfect!
- when you want to know what the left is doing just look at what they’re accusing conservatives of.
btw “man-centered” is a choice of words only used to deny the validity of another’s faith and is often used by adherents of the “Last Days” belief.
Vonster, you really should read the posts before you try the Mother Jones is biased smear. The article Ms. Hopkins linked to has a quote from a Santorum spokeman referring to the bill’s provision as being the product of “consensus.” BTW The Drudge report also had this story.
Since Santorum is the new frontrunner, it is not my fault that his opponents are choosing to smear Santorum across America.

No, BrianG…
