Regarding the Aaron Schock piece: What really galls me is the response to this latest ethical breach. The paper of record just blatantly punted on this issue. John Sharp asked the candidate and the campaign manager softball questions and accepted their answers uncritically. No mention was made of the notary problem involving back dated off shore tax documents or of Steve Shearer’s previous employer’s very similar problems. The Journal Star then publishes a short editorial paragraph in the Sunday paper where they state that taxpayer’s money is not the issue. I guess it is only a crime if taxpayer money is involved. If you or I were to get arrested at a protest, we’d be facing 2 years in the slammer, but Congressman Schock and Steve Shearer they don’t even have to sweat any tough questions. The Journal also punts by kicking the responsibility to the FEC to investigate this matter. Talk about a toothless governmental watchdog! Of course, the award winning editorial board wants to wait for more reporting. Did the Journal Star break the Notary story in 2008 or was it the Tribune and AP? Do I expect any more on this story? No.

Now a bone to pick with you. You wrote that CREW is a liberal leaning George Soros funded organization. I would have written “watchdog” shorter word count after all, but if you are going to throw a bone to the right wingers and frame it that way, I’ll play the ref too and demand that you provide information of every Koch brother and Exxon funded front organization also.

Lastly, I get sick and tired of every time a politician is caught with his or her hands in the cookie jar, partisan view this as a partisan issue. I am a liberal Democrat, but you didn’t hear me rushing to Blagojevich’s defense, or whitewashing Alexi Giannoulias’ banking problems, or arguing that Anthony Wiener’s twitter problem should be ignored because it didn’t involve taxpayer dollars. Illinois Republican Tim Johnson isn’t in the CREW report because he is able to follow the rules, and Peoria’s very own Congressman isn’t ranked in the middle of the pack. Congressman Schock is ranked in the Top FIVE.
